Tara Battery Energy Storage System
(Tara BESS)
Keeping our communities connected to a strong Ontario
Reliable power. Supporting communities. Protecting our environment.
Neoen is developing a new battery project in the Bruce-Grey region of Ontario to deliver reliable, affordable, and clean electricity that will help strengthen the electricity grid that powers our homes, businesses, and industries.
With a storage capacity of 400-megawatts (MW) / 1,600-megawatt hours (MWh), Tara Battery can supply enough electricity in a single day to meet the energy needs of approximately 385,000 Ontario households for 4 hours.

Why battery storage?
Because our demand for electricity is rising—by a lot.
The demand for electricity to power our lives has never been greater. To keep energy reliable and affordable, we need smarter ways to store electricity for when demand peaks.
Batteries make this possible. They store electricity when the grid has surplus power and release it when we need it most. This means fewer risks of power outages, more stability, and cleaner energy for everyone.
Think about what that supports:
- The lights and appliances in our homes
- Phones, TVs, and computers we use everyday
- Stores, offices, hospitals, factories, and more that keep our communities running.
Energy storage ensures all of this works seamlessly— today and into the future.
How it works

Finding a site
Neoen thanks all residents, stakeholders, and Rights-holders for their valuable input, which informed our decision to cancel the originally proposed site. We will soon re-engage the community to explore alternative locations for this clean energy project. Your patience is appreciated, and we welcome further feedback at info@tarabattery.ca.
Our commitment to the community
For local economy
Up to 200+ full-time jobs at peak construction, creating opportunities for local individuals and First Nations businesses.
For the climate
Tara Battery, with a capacity of 400 MW / 1,600 MWh, if fully charged and discharged once per day, could supply approximately 584,000 MWh annually. Each battery discharge (1,600 MWh) can power around 385,000 four-person households for 4 hours.
For your community
Tara Battery will deliver community benefits to the municipality through a dedicated Community Benefit Fund and annual municipal tax contributions.
Project lifecycle
Neoen is a global leader in clean energy, proud to be contributing to a strong Ontario.
Our commitment is simple:
- Safety first
- Listen well
- Share benefits
- Protect land and water
- Be a good neighbour
We know trust is earned, not given. That is why we focus on safety, reliability, and care for the local environment in everything we do.
Our goal is to work alongside the community, listen to concerns, and ensure our projects bring real benefits for Bruce County.
We have chosen to invest in Ontario because we see its potential and its commitment to a clean-energy future. Our goal is to contribute responsibly— delivering reliable energy solutions that create real benefits for local communities and support a stronger, more sustainable economy for everyone.
Neoen Ontario BESS 1 Inc. (Neoen) has signed a 20-year contract with Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) to deliver Tara Battery, a 400 MW / 1,600 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). This project is one of ten storage facilities selected through the IESO’s Long-Term 1 (LT1) procurement in May 2024, and will store excess electricity, release power during peak demand, and support renewable energy integration across Ontario.
Neoen is a leading independent power producer of exclusively renewable energy, with 8.3 GW of capacity in operation or under construction across four continents, including over 2.7 GW / 8.1 GWh of battery storage capacity worldwide as at the end of December 2025.
We are committed to sharing the benefits of our projects with the communities around them. By prioritising both people and the environment, we have become a developer of choice and a pioneer in the renewable energy sector, focused on building lasting relationships wherever we operate.
Operating in Canada since 2022, with offices in Toronto and Calgary, Neoen operates the Fox Coulée Solar Farm (93 MWp) in Drumheller, Alberta, and was awarded contracts for Tara Battery (400 MW / 1,600 MWh) and Mino Giizis Solar Energy Facility (157 MWp) in May 2024 and December 2025, respectively. Neoen Canada is actively developing a growing portfolio of solar, battery, and wind projects across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.
