Valley Edge
Battery
Overview
Neoen Renewables Canada Inc. (Neoen) is proposing to develop a standalone 250-megawatt (MW) / 1,000-megawatt hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) known as Valley Edge Battery, proposed for development on private land in Red Deer County, Alberta.
Valley Edge Battery is proposed to store and discharge electricity to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES), and to provide ancillary services, such as frequency support, virtual inertia, and network support.
The preliminary design for Valley Edge Battery includes:
- 288 lithium-ion battery cell containers, equipped with inverters and fans
- 72 medium voltage transformers
- A substation containing two (2) high voltage transformers, switching equipment, and a SCADA system
- Transmission structures will be erected to carry overhead transmission lines from the substation to point of interconnection (to the electricity grid)
Valley Edge Battery will be enclosed by fencing, and will include a site office, parking, site lighting, security cameras, and equipment storage space.
Neoen submitted the Valley Edge Battery project to the Alberta Electric System Operator’s (AESO) Interconnection Process– Cluster 2– in October 2024.
Location
Valley Edge BESS is located at Range Road 260 and Township Road 381 in Red Deer County, 11-kilometres east of the City of Red Deer, Alberta.
How batteries add value to the grid
The demand for electricity to power our lives has never been greater. To keep energy reliable and affordable, we need smarter ways to store electricity for when demand peaks.
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) make this possible. They store electricity when the grid has surplus power and release it when we need it most. This means fewer risks of power outages, more stability, and cleaner energy for everyone.
Think about what that supports:
- The lights and appliances in our homes
- Phones, TVs, and computers we use everyday
- Stores, offices, hospitals, factories, and more that keep our communities running
Energy storage ensures all of this works seamlessly—today and into the future.

Our Commitment to the Community
For local economy
Up to 200 full-time jobs at peak construction, creating opportunities for local individuals and Indigenous businesses
For the climate
Valley Edge Battery, with a capacity of 250 MW / 1,000 MWh, if fully charged and discharged once per day, could supply approximately 365,000 MWh annually. Each battery discharge (1,000 MWh) can power around 240,600 four-person households for 4 hours
For your community
A community benefits fund to support clean energy, biodiversity, environmental, Indigenous-specific, cultural, social and/or educational initiatives
Project Lifecycle
Neoen is a global leader in clean energy, proud to be contributing to a strong Alberta.
Our commitment is simple:
- Safety first
- Listen well
- Share benefits
- Protect land and water
- Be a good neighbour
We know trust is earned, not given. That is why we focus on safety, reliability, and care for the local environment in everything we do.
Our goal is to work alongside the community, listen to concerns, and ensure our projects bring real benefits for Red Deer County.
We have chosen to invest in Alberta because we see its potential and its commitment to a clean-energy future. Our goal is to contribute responsibly— delivering reliable energy solutions that create real benefits for local communities and support a stronger, more sustainable economy for everyone.
Valley Edge Battery will occupy an at-grade footprint of approximately 12-acres, excluding transmission lines and structures. It is expected that approximately 750-metres of overhead transmission line will be required to connect Valley Edge Battery to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES).
Neoen is a leading independent power producer of exclusively renewable energy, with 8.3 GW of capacity in operation or under construction across four continents, including over 2.7 GW / 8.1 GWh of battery storage capacity worldwide as at the end of December 2025.
We are committed to sharing the benefits of our projects with the communities around them. By prioritising both people and the environment, we have become a developer of choice and a pioneer in the renewable energy sector, focused on building lasting relationships wherever we operate.
Operating in Canada since 2022, with offices in Toronto and Calgary, Neoen operates the Fox Coulée Solar Farm (93 MWp) in Drumheller, Alberta, and was awarded contracts for Tara Battery (400 MW / 1,600 MWh) and Mino Giizis Solar Energy Facility (157 MWp) in May 2024 and December 2025, respectively. Neoen Canada is actively developing a growing portfolio of solar, battery, and wind projects across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.
