Jumbo
Battery
Overview
Neoen Renewables Canada Inc. (Neoen) is proposing to develop a standalone, 218-megawatt (MW) / 872-megawatt hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) on private lands in the Municipal District of Willow Creek No. 26, Alberta.
Jumbo Battery is being proposed in place of the previously proposed Jumbo Solar with Storage Project. Neoen withdrew its AUC application for the Jumbo Solar with Storage project in April 2025.
Jumbo Battery is a standalone battery— there are no plans to expand the project to include another renewable technology, such as solar.
Jumbo Battery is proposed to store and discharge electricity to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES), and to provide ancillary services, such as frequency support, virtual inertia, and network support.
The preliminary design for Jumbo Battery includes:
- 227 lithium-ion battery cell containers, equipped with inverters and fans
- Medium voltage transformers
- A substation containing one (1) high voltage transformer, switching equipment, and a SCADA system
- Transmission structures will be erected to carry overhead transmission lines from the substation to point of interconnection (to the electricity grid)
Jumbo Battery is proposed to interconnect to the existing AltaLink transmission line 1037L located approximately 80 metres to the east of the site.
Location
Jumbo Battery is located on private lands, approximately 4-kilometres southwest of the Town of Fort MacLeod in the Municipal District of Willow Creek No. 26, Alberta.
How batteries add value to the electricity grid
The demand for electricity to power our lives has never been greater. To keep energy reliable and affordable, we need smarter ways to store electricity for when demand peaks.
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) make this possible. They store electricity when the grid has surplus power and release it when we need it most. This means fewer risks of power outages, more stability, and cleaner energy for everyone.
Think about what that supports:
- The lights and appliances in our homes
- Phones, TVs, and computers we use everyday
- Stores, offices, hospitals, factories, and more that keep our communities running
Energy storage ensures all of this works seamlessly—today and into the future.

Our Commitment to the Community
For local economy
Up to 100 full-time jobs at peak construction, creating opportunities for local individuals and Indigenous businesses
For the climate
Jumbo Battery, with a capacity of 218 MW / 872 MWh, if fully charged and discharged once per day, could supply approximately 318,280 MWh annually. Each battery discharge (872 MWh) can power around 209,800 four-person households for 4 hours
For your community
$50,000 annual Community Benefits Fund to support local initiatives, commencing at operations and continuing each year of operations
$48 million (estimated) in municipal tax revenues over the first 20 years
Project Lifecycle
Neoen is a global leader in clean energy, proud to be contributing to a strong Alberta.
Our commitment is simple:
- Safety first
- Listen well
- Share benefits
- Protect land and water
- Be a good neighbour
We know trust is earned, not given. That is why we focus on safety, reliability, and care for the local environment in everything we do.
Our goal is to work alongside the community, listen to concerns, and ensure our projects bring real benefits for the MD of Willow Creek No. 26.
We have chosen to invest in Alberta because we see its potential and its commitment to a clean-energy future. Our goal is to contribute responsibly— delivering reliable energy solutions that create real benefits for local communities and support a stronger, more sustainable economy for everyone.
Jumbo Battery will occupy an at-grade footprint of approximately 15-acres, excluding transmission lines and structures. It is expected that approximately 600-metres of overhead transmission line will be required to connect Jumbo BESS to the Alberta Interconnected Electric System (AIES).
Neoen is a leading independent power producer of exclusively renewable energy, with a global portfolio capacity of 8.9-gigawatts (GW) in operation or under construction across 14 countries. Neoen has over 4 GW of solar capacity in operation or under construction globally.
Our develop-to-own strategy means we own and operate our projects for the long term, prioritizing the cultivation of lasting relationships within the communities where we work. We are committed to sharing the benefits of our projects with surrounding communities. This dedication to both people and the environment has established us as a developer of choice and a pioneer in the renewable energy industry.
Neoen has an active solar plant, Fox Coulee Solar Farm, in Starland County, Alberta, and several projects in development in Canada.
